NASA INTERNATIONAL SPACE APPS CHALLENGE
The NASA Space Apps Challenge is an international hackathon with Perth taking part on 20-21 October 2018. CORE Innovation Hub Perth is proud to be hosting the initiative again this year, together with Space Hub Perth, Unearthed and Spacecubed.
CORE is hosting an informal team building session and challenge review in the FLUX Basement on Fri 19 Oct from 4:00-6:00PM. Come along if you are interested to talk about what challenge you are interested in working on and to find team mates. Register for the Perth even via https://2018.spaceappschallenge.org and we will invite you to the SpaceAppsChallenge18 Slack channel and team building session.
MAIN OBJECTIVE
Our goal at CORE in supporting the Space Apps Challenge is to draw on our thriving tech community and resources and energy sector, one of our sectors of strength to build a community of practice to drive capability and new enterprise in the space sector.
The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing open-source solutions to challenges we currently face on Earth and in Space. NASA Scientists write the yearly challenges, which are based on mission critical real-world problems. We support NASA's open data initiative and mission to foster innovation through a diversity of perspectives, and empowered by open data, global citizens collaborate with strangers, colleagues, and friends to solve perplexing challenges in new and unexpected ways. We are excited to be part of providing an opportunity for students, technical experts, engineers, makers, designers, project managers and storytellers to come together and create something unique.
PRIZES & INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Local Prizes will be awarded following final pitches on the last day and include:
- The top 2 teams will share up to $1000 worth of tech prizes amongst their group.
- Community Membership (1 month) at CORE Innovation Hub
- Free attendance to take part in the Unearthed Perth 2019 industry hackathon at CORE
The two winning projects will be nominated from Perth to the international challenge, judged by NASA executives. NASA Space Apps will announce the global champion of each category a few weeks after the event and the winning teams will be invited to attend the upcoming NASA’s Rocket Launch at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Florida (travel costs is not included).
Be inspired! One of Perth’s 2016 winners, using NASA data and facial recognition technology to produce a creative, real-time interpretation of climate change, went on to be recognised as a finalist in the world’s in the top 25 teams globally.
For those teams interested in developing their idea as a start-up enterprise, CORE has partnered with Moonshot’s Gemini Incubator a global space and deep-tech community for problem solvers of all skill sets, to provide a pathway of continued support.
