After a long Saturday of ideation, we have finalized our project idea for looking GLOBE-ally which is. Our goal is to build an inquisitive analysis(an app) to help the public better understand how much carbon they are contributing to the global environment.
Oftentimes when information on Carbon Emissions are released to the global public, statistics are in units that are not commonly used by the public or on a magnitude that makes it hard to visualize. Our solution is the app CO2UNTER. An app which provides an insightful way of displaying Carbon Emission data by convert our Carbon Footprint into Visible data.
CO2UNTER does the following:
1. Quantifies actions in the form of carbon emissions by converting data in an interactive and fun way.
2. Allows users to understand the magnitude of scale of carbon emissions by comparing it to everyday items.
3. Encourage users to be more aware of the impact of carbon emissions.
The Carbon component of an individual's Ecological Footprint can be converted into tonnes of carbon with a simple conversion factor (dividing by 2.8*10^5 global hectares, or 691,895 global acres per ton of CO2 per year). Examples of conversion factors are:
1 Chicken = 6.9kg of CO2
I Piece of wood = I.8kg of CO2
I Banana = 0.74kg of CO2
We hope that through our app, users will have a better understanding of their own Carbon Footprint and hence take steps to reduce their own Carbon Emissions, helping us move towards a more sustainable future.
