Build a crowdsourcing tool for citizens to contribute to early detection, verification, tracking, visualization, and notification of wildfires.
AlertaFuegoGT
AlertaFuegoGT is a wildfire detection system using the VIIRS data from the nasa, which also allows people to make their own report, thus allowing authorities to alert communities that could be affected by wildfire and act to control these events.
Our land, Guatemala has been having an increase on wildfires due to farmers, drought, and the entities late response. Our project AlertaFuegoGT is trying to make the entities response faster by tracking the wildfires with help of NASA's VIIRS data. Also, users can report wildfires in a simple way by providing their geolocation and a photo of the event, with the help of IBM image recognition we automatically discard false reports. With this we hope to reduce the impact that wildfires have on the Guatemalan's ecosystem and economy.
How it works:
- Download every 1h the VIIRS file, filter the points that are Guatemalan and get the names of the towns near the wildfire.
- It creates a report and image alert with python and is published on twitter.
- At the same time it creates a copy of the wildfires of the last 7 days that can be seen on the site.
- The option to report a wildfire is obtained the lat and lng of the user as well as the photo of the event, but before saving it is verified that this photo is of a wildfire not controlled with IBM Visual Recognition.
- Then check that it is a valid report is added to the database in the "user reports" section.
- The report is published in twitter using the image that the user uploads and the corresponding data.
Some things to add would be:
- Reverse search in google images and similar so that they do not upload images of wildfires that do not belong to Guatemala.
- Directly notify the nearest emergency services.
