The Challenge | The Land Where Displaced People Settle

Characterize land cover/land use at informal settlements of displaced populations using NASA satellite datasets.

ChainedHelp

Our goal is to make it easier to access the proper land necessary in oder to build a refugee camp. We are developing the tool to use APIs from NASA satellites, Google and BMI to make an analysis of a portion of land requested by the user.

We are the Breakfast Club, a group of students between 13 and 19 years old. Our goal is to help the situation our world is in currently through programming. To fulfill this objective, we created ChainedHelp. An application that seeks to facilitate the work that organizations must do to build refugee camps. In 2017 alone there were 2.9 million refugees of which only 100K received some type of support from the international community. We hope to help these people.
For
this we developed an application that would allow us to determine which places within a parameterized radius that meet the conditions set by the United Nations for the construction of refugee camps. From the search area we use the Weather IBM apis, to determine relevant climatic data, Google Maps, for the terrain heights and NASA to obtain satellite images that, through Watson Visual Recognition, allow us to detect both the presence of necessary resources such as forests, water and access to road infrastructure, such as recognizing, for example, large depressions or precipices, which may be a risk.
