The Challenge | Health Makes Wealth

Integrate NASA Earth science data and citizen science data to learn more about the connections between human, animal, and environmental health.

MosquitoCast gives a forecast on mosquito activity based on the weather. As one of the most dealy animals, this can help people protect themselves against disease. It can also help spread awareness of how issues such as climate change can affect our health

MosquitoCast was made with the intent to help people predict the activity of the anopheles mosquito in their area, using the correlation between the mosquito and temperature, allowing them to adequately prepare for any mosquito infestations and help stop Malaria, a dangerous, killer disease around the world.

We wanted MosquitoCast to be used by everyone, from the average traveler who needs to know whether he/she should carry extra repellents or not, to government bodies who might need to increase the number of mosquito nets in circulation and heighten malaria awareness.

The resource used was the Open Weather Map ( to get weather data from a specific location as our research indicated that mosquito activity either increases or decreases based on weather patterns. Models relating mosquito activity to temperature were taken from s research paper by Lindsay M. Beck-Johnson and can be found here, - MosquitoCast github repo
