The Challenge | Don’t Forget the Can Opener!

Create an easy-to-use way for people to develop their own, custom checklists – both items and plans – for specific kinds of disasters. Use NASA images, videos, or data visualizations to illustrate each disaster type, to help people understand how to prepare.

Heimdal

A natural disaster helping app that will help you understand what to do in case of an emergency. You will develop knowledge for making a plan, create a virtual emergency kit with items you consider vital for survival and a panic button.

Heimdal's Guardians

Background

Heimdal was developed thinking in a easy-way to obtain and comprehend knowledge for every person who use it, permitting them to make a plan or make decisions based on basic information about how to act in a natural disaster. For this early version, our project instance let user to visualize 4 natural disasters how to react facts and a recommendation on items user should carry in virtual kit depending the disaster faced.

There is a screen for creating user virtual kit, it permits user to create a virtual kit, which, it will allow user to plan what items to grab in a real natural disaster situation, benefiting user plan making. User can add or delete item, delete all kit list, Heimdal reminds whenever user is adding to many items in virtual kit, because in his planning for a real emergency kit , his kit will be too heavy making it harder to carry in a situation.

Heimdal develop team thought in addition to this challenge request to add a Panic Alert Button, it calls and text 911, message sent has latitude and longitude from smartphone which can really help in case of an emergency had occurred.

Heimdal does not need an internet conection to work.

Resources

  • MIT App Inventor

Challenges Faced

  • Thinking how to condense the information in a image for better comprehension for the user.
  • Trying to get virtual kits with an estimated weight for each kit created.
  • Getting latitude and longitude for sending message to 911

What to Expect in the Future from our Project

  • Use user location to visualize information about natural disasters that usually occur in user region, optimizing user time and improving functionality for accessing easier to the info.
  • Virtual Kit having an option for adding and removing direct quantities for each item in virtual kit list.
  • Create more than one virtual kit, letting user load saved kit list for better decision and plan making.
  • Letting user know and approximated weight based on a preload most used items weight for better pan making.
