The Challenge | Don’t Forget the Can Opener!

Create an easy-to-use way for people to develop their own, custom checklists – both items and plans – for specific kinds of disasters. Use NASA images, videos, or data visualizations to illustrate each disaster type, to help people understand how to prepare.

Emergency Backpack is a website created for the NASA Space Apps Challenge. It is a simple and practical guide to help you prepare your backpack in order to survive an emergency. The website is created with Wix and the link is the following: https://ioannagnk.wixsite.com/emergency

The user goes on the home page and chooses one of the 3 emergency cases (more to be added). Then, there are a few tips and an extended emergency checklist, as well as a list of items to take if time allows and the total weight of the backpack in each case. We calculated the weight of each item on the emergency list.

Another option is the virtual bag. The user needs an account to manage his virtual bag and create a custom emergency checklist.

Also, due to the huge amount of calls during emergencies, we understand that it would be really useful to have a contact form in our website so that we can help local authorities and volunteers to track missing people.

The biggest challenge we faced was the calculation of the weight in each case and the creation of a custom checklist and a virtual bag in the time offered.
