The Challenge | Don’t Forget the Can Opener!

Create an easy-to-use way for people to develop their own, custom checklists – both items and plans – for specific kinds of disasters. Use NASA images, videos, or data visualizations to illustrate each disaster type, to help people understand how to prepare.

Overview

80 percent of the United States citizens know that it is important to prepare for an emergency. Even though, about only one-third of them have a plan for when a disaster arrives. When people are not prepared, they perform badly. In a natural disaster scenario, people are usually too scared to come up with even some most basic ideas, what could lead to injuries and even death.

In order to help US inhabitants to increase their survival chance in a crisis, we designed this website to offer tips for pre-preparation and to use the phone call system to help them deal with disasters.

Our system is helpful not only for inhabitants but for government and hospitals as well. With our suggestions, people will be more organized and calm during disasters so that the police officers and firefighters would pay less attention to keep the crowd in order so that they can focus on more important things like saving people or put off the fire. Also, if the crowd is more organized and well-informed, accidents caused by panic crowd itself would happen less, which would avoid overloading hospitals’ emergency rooms.

Bot, our virtual emergency assistant, is focused on assisting you during an emergency. It will help you in a step by step process to evacuate to a safe location and give instructions about what to do in a specific situation. It will dictate your plan out loud. It will help you quickly gather everything you need if you do not have an emergency kit ready.

The first step to face an emergency is to be prepared! Go to our website (http://dibot.ml) and get information about the four most common types of natural disasters in the United States and how to act during them. Then, register on our platform, follow our checklist to prepare the emergency kit that you will use in a crisis, and, most importantly, create your personalized checklist according to your specific needs. Finally, save our “Bot” number in your cell phone contact list so you are to ready to call it when you face a disaster.
