Create a game using images from the Hubble Space Telescope as integral components!

Hubble Trouble

Hubble Trouble gamifies learning about images from the Hubble telescope.

Our project aims to use gamification and images from the Hubble Telescope to teach and educate users who play. We used an equation that calculates apparent magnitude, and utilized OpenSpace datasets to calculate the apparent magnitude of the stars in the images provided. We then used this value as a proxy of battle power to compete against other users. Some difficulties we faced were finding the correct equation to use and in testing our model. We also struggled in finding the correct data to use as input for the equation, but finally were able to find accurate data that resulted in a strong model.

Resources used: Hubble Telescope, OpenSpace datasets, and the paper "Contextualization of Autonomous Spaceflight Operations for deep space planetary encounters" (Marcinkowski, 2019).
