The Challenge | Don’t Forget the Can Opener!

Create an easy-to-use way for people to develop their own, custom checklists – both items and plans – for specific kinds of disasters. Use NASA images, videos, or data visualizations to illustrate each disaster type, to help people understand how to prepare.

SOS RELIEF

SOS RELIEF IS AN ONLINE AND OFFLINE PLATFORM WITH THE AID OF MOBILE APPLICATION AND AN EMBEDDED SYSTEM TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF FLOODING,FIRE OUTBREAK, EARTHQUAKE AND VOLCANIC ERUPTION

SIBA

SOS relief is platform that works both Offline and Online, it is made up of an embedded system, a receiver (which works offline) and a mobile application. These elements are linked together in order to disperse quick and relevant information that could reduce the impact of disasters on lives and properties, it also lists the preventive measures to be carried out in case of any occurring disaster, as this information could save lives. The disasters critically covered were flooding, fire, Earthquakes,And Volcanic eruption.

The hardware section is divided into two, the transmitter and the receiver nodes.

i)The transmitter node consists of embedded sensors used to measure various parameters and upload these data to the cloud in real time, it also sends a distress signal to the receiver nodes if the values exceed a certain threshold mapped out in the firmware. It is made up of

1) Ultrasonic sensor

2) DHT 22 temperature sensor

3) Arduino Uno

4) Ethernet shield

5) Smoke Sensor

6) 433Mhz transmitter.

This node sends the sensor values to cloud which can also be monitored by the mobile application in real time.

ii) The receiver node only receives the distress signal sent by the transmitter. It consists of

1) Arduino Uno

2) 16×2 LCD

3) 433Mhz receiver

4) Buzzer

5) Momentary push buttons.

The receiver node works completely offline, and thus can be used by those who don't access to a smart phone or find themselves in places with poor or no internet connection.

The database was operated in Google Cloud Platform - MySQL Servers. The database was linked to the online and offline systems.

A brief look at the Mobile app of the system was developed via the Android Studio. It covered operations related to the four disasters considered such as safety measures,What to do before, during and after any of the disaster, live data section, visual section which serves as disasters education where NASA data was immensely used and assist in preparing a go-bag in times on emergency. The mobile app was linked to the database already created in Google Cloud Platform and was link to Open API provided by USGS data sets for live data for the earthquake and Volcanic eruptions.

All of the features of the mobile app apart the live data section can be accessed offline. The go-bag section assist individuals with a restrictions of not exceeding 48 pounds (as prescribed by Health Services) and a list of all possible item to have in our preset inventory and help in calculation of their weight calculation of the items.

The challenges we faced was the time factor as we didn't camp, electricity and bugs in our program.

Thank You NASA for this opportunity.
