The Challenge | Don’t Forget the Can Opener!

Create an easy-to-use way for people to develop their own, custom checklists – both items and plans – for specific kinds of disasters. Use NASA images, videos, or data visualizations to illustrate each disaster type, to help people understand how to prepare.

Disaster Survivor

Disasater Survivor is a mobile application which uses "survival tags" that are placed in sites where natural disasters can occur.

Happy Moon

This application will provide the user with personalized information about a specific location where natural disasters could occur. This information is provided through "survival tags". By means of "survival tags" the users will be able to obtain a bunch of useful information not only about the location but also about how/what to do in case that a natural disaster happens when they are there. The app provides the user with:

  • A checklist with the key items to bring to the location
  • Protocols of emergency
  • Geographical information
  • Notify users in case new disasters occur

The Survival tags consist of QR codes and NFC sensors. They contain color codes that identify different types of natural disaster and are personalized depending on the location.

The types of natural disasters associated with the different colors are:

  • Volcanoes : Red
  • Eathquakes : Brown
  • Avalanches : White
  • Floods : Blue
  • Wildfires : Orange

The tags can have multiple colors in case in that location multiple natural disasters may happen.

The architecture of the application consists of 4 parts:

  1. Mobile or frontend application (iPhone, Android)
  2. Core application or backend (.NET)
  3. Access to DB (SQL)
  4. External services (Google API)
