The Challenge | Don’t Forget the Can Opener!

Create an easy-to-use way for people to develop their own, custom checklists – both items and plans – for specific kinds of disasters. Use NASA images, videos, or data visualizations to illustrate each disaster type, to help people understand how to prepare.

There are many natural disasters in the world! To decrease the destructions on the Earth, the best way is trying to understand what kind of situations we will meet and how to prevent from them.

The NASA information are very helpful for us to let people have the imagination for distinguishing different disasters. Therefore, we used the images with the explanations of treatments for these terrible disasters, and provided source to let the knowledge be easier to remember.

Moreover, due to making a general - purpose emergency preparedness kit, we referenced the list ‘Proper Emergency Kit Essential to Hurricane Preparedness’ written by FEMA. In accordance with it, we tried to let everyone learn this essential intelligence by a game we made. At the beginning of the game, the user has a bag about 0.5kg, and then He needs to think about which things are really important while evacuating and must maintains the weight of the whole bag being under 12kg.

In the end, each user can study the concepts of packing from the game. We thought the main challenges in this program for us are the limited data we can find, the insufficient computer skills we have, and the finite amount of time to complete this issue. Even though we could not overcome all the problems, we thought that we had tried to do our best, and this experience for us is impressive and memorable.
