The Challenge | Make Sense Out of Mars

Develop a sensor to be used by humans on Mars.

Mars Scan

MarsScan. Detect OR discover: Connections and substances for life: CHON and CHNOPS. Traces of biological processes. Chemical composition of the surface. The process of forming stones and soil. Water and carbon dioxid

Space root

Internal structure

Our concept is to place remote sensing sensors in the middle of a sealed ball "shell" 2 that has a protective layer 1 that will move due to the displacement of the center of gravity of the "core" 3.

This displacement will be realized thanks to electromagnets 4, which are located on the inner surface of the ball and the core of the magnetic material. That is, pulling the core into a certain direction, we will force the probe to move in this direction. If the probe is loaded with a sharp displacement of the core, we will create a pulse that will free up.

Equipment:

Navigate:

  • HazCam.
  • NavCam.
  • Lidar.
  • Sonar

Communication:

  • UHF - for communication with artificial satellites
  • X-band (7.0 to 11.2 GHz) is a connection to the Earth

Discover:

  • MAC (stereo), MAHLI (micro), MARDI (relief) - research cameras.
  • ChemCam: LIBS, RMI - external properties of stones or soil.
  • APXS, CheMin - chemical and mineralogical composition.
  • SAM - was life.
  • RAD - radiation background.
  • DAN - we are looking for hydrogen, water or ice.
  • REMS - pressure, humidity, temperature, wind ...
  • MEDLI is the atmosphere of the atmosphere.
